What is hypochlorous acid?

Hypochlorous acid is a free chlorine molecule with the chemical structure HOCl. It is the dominant free chlorine substance in chlorine solution, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. HOCl is a more powerful oxidant than sodium hypochlorite (or chlorine bleach).


Will it appear in nature?

Hypochlorous acid can be naturally produced by mammalian white blood cells. It is used by white blood cells to kill invading microbial pathogens.


How does it kill microbial pathogens?

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a neutrally charged molecule. Bacteria have negatively charged cell walls. Like a magnet, molecules with the same electric charge also repel each other. For example, negatively charged bleach molecules (OCl-) will repel each other with bacterial cell walls. HOCl has a neutral charge, so this is not the case. HOCl easily penetrates the bacterial cell wall. HOCl can oxidize the cell wall to kill bacteria or enter and destroy important components in the bacteria through the cell wall.


Are there any disadvantages?

Unlike other sanitary chemicals, hypochlorous acid does not have a sustained antimicrobial effect. In other words, once it falls on a surface, it will react with any bacteria or organics on that surface and then immediately inactivate. This is both good and bad. The advantage is that it does not need to be rinsed after use, because there are no toxic chemical residues. The disadvantage is that it must continue to ensure its application.


How is hypochlorous acid made?

Hypochlorous acid is made through a process called electrolysis. Electrolyzed water is produced by passing sodium chloride solution (NaCl) through an electrolytic cell containing an anode and a cathode. There are two commonly used electrolysis methods to produce hypochlorous acid, membrane electrolysis and single cell electrolysis. Membrane electrolysis converts brine into two solutions, namely, a strongly acidic anolyte of hypochlorous acid and a strongly alkaline catholyte of sodium hydroxide. Single cell electrolysis converts brine into a solution, a slightly acidic to neutral anolyte of hypochlorous acid.
